Senate Appropriations Committee approve NIH, NIDDK funding increase: 4 notes

The Senate Appropriations Committee approved a bipartisan appropriations bill for fiscal year 2017, which includes funding for the National Institute for Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Disease, according to an AGA report.

Here are four notes:

1. The appropriations bill increases NIH funding by $2 billion for a total of $34 billion.

2. The NIDDK received $1.89 billion in funding, up 4 percent from funding last year.

3. Colorectal Cancer Control Program funding remained the same as last year.

4. Additionally, the bill also highlighted the importance of GI research, such as research on colorectal cancer, type I diabetes and inflammatory bowel disease.
