Connecticut Surgeon Fined, Reprimanded for Dirty Equipment, Sloppy Records

Joel B. Singer, MD, a plastic surgeon from Westport, Conn., has been fined and reprimanded by the state’s Medical Examining Board for violating several patient safety standards, according to a Day report.

In May, officials from the state Department of Health officials found dirty floors and rusty equipment such as tweezers, an IV pole and scissors at Dr. Singer’s surgery center. They also discovered the center failed to track sponges and needles used during surgery and to properly document patients’ infection or allergies.

Dr. Singer, who reportedly did not dispute the department’s findings, agreed to pay the board $25,000 and will be placed on probation for two years.
