Dr. Peter Apicella: Colon Cancer Detection Improved With Virtual CT Colonoscopy

Peter Apicella, MD, chief of radiology at Salem Community Hospital says virtual CT colonoscopy involves a less intense preparation, does not require sedation, is less invasive and provides minimal disruption to a patient’s routine, in an article in MD News.

Virtual CT colonoscopy creates 3-D images of the colon and a does a complete scan of the abdomen and pelvis. It can find tumors, polyps and other abnormalities. Although many insurance companies cover the test for asymptomatic patients, Medicare currently does not.
