Surgical Care Affiliates Could Move Illinois Surgery Center to New Location in Vernon Hills

Surgical Care Affiliates may move its Libertyville, Ill.-based Hawthorn Surgery Center to a new location in Vernon Hills, Ill., according to a Crain's Chicago Business report.

The new $10 million facility would be an upgrade from the current location, which Surgical Care Affiliates said is outdated in its application to the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board. Hawthorn currently performs a wide range of surgeries and netted $9.1 million in patient revenue in 2011.

SCA must receive approval from the board before the surgery center moves. In a letter to the board, David Havill, vice president of administration at nearby Lake Forest Hospital, said the hospital and a Northwestern surgery center in Grayslake, Ill., are able to handle the community's patient volume, making a new surgery center unnecessary.

If approved, the new Vernon Hills location would feature three surgical suites, one procedure room and 13 recovery stations. SCA believes the new center will receive approximately 3,400 patient referrals every year upon completion in 2015.

Surgical Care Affiliates has 145 surgical facilities nationwide, including four in the Chicago area, and reported a net income of $69.4 million on operating revenue of $740.5 million in 2010.
