Predictive analytics helps hospital reduce colon surgery SSI risk by 58%

Fierce Health IT reports that  Iowa City-based University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has reduced surgical infections after colon surgery by 58 percent using predictive analytics, according to a Health IT Outcomes report.

The analytics tool has helped surgeons figure out which patients are most at risk for post-surgical infections. The software uses a model of the surgical environment which includes procedures, outcomes and surgical site infection risks. The model includes information from more than 1,600 patients and now, surgeons can access that information and compare it to their own patients in real time to determine SSI risk, according to the report.
