Here are some of Medscape’s hits:

1. When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi, MD. Dr. Kalanithi’s memoir features his life following his stage IV lung cancer diagnosis. The neurosurgeon died prior to finishing his memoir, but his wife Lucy Kalanithi, MD, published the memoir posthumously.

In an interview with Medscape earlier this year, Dr. Lucy Kalanithi said, “He surprised himself by entering medicine, and ultimately it was because he wanted to be face-to-face with people who were making those tough decisions and approaching their mortality directly. When he was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer when he was 36 and a chief resident in neurosurgery at Stanford, those questions were no longer theoretical. They were deeply emotional and existential for him.”

2. The Gene: An Intimate History by Siddhartha Mukherjee, MD. Dr. Mukherjee details genetics’ origin in the book and integrates his family’s history of mental illness into the piece. Dr. Mukherjee told Medscape that the structure of knowledge motivated him to write The Gene: An Intimate History.
