Patients are not significantly more aware of hospital quality reports in 2012 as in 2008, but there was a moderate surge of awareness of physician quality reports.
“There’s a large focus on producing these reports with the right intention of getting consumers more engaged, much like we do with ratings for restaurant meals or automobiles, but I think the evidence suggests we still have a lot of work to do,” said co-author Dennis Scanlon, professor of health policy and administration and director of the Center for Health Care and Policy Research at Penn State.
Researchers also concluded in order to increase awareness to quality and performance reports among chronically ill patients, ideas to approach report cards dissemination should be emphasized.
