The organization argued in the statement that propofol is used in ASCs as a general anesthetic on a daily basis and access to the drug is critical to prevent disruption in care. Missouri is the first state scheduled to use propofol in an execution later this month and MASCA is concerned this use could create access to care issues.
“Our patients and their families place a significant amount of trust in us during each operation; we should be advancing patient safety standards and our surgery centers are not comfortable providing substandard care with lower quality anesthetics,” said MASCA President Chris Hartshorn in the statement.
