Here’s what you need to know.
1. The FDA is banning 19 ingredients in total. Triclosan and triclocarban, common ingredients in antibacterial soap, were both included in the ban. There is “fears” the ingredients damage the immune system.
2. Director of the FDA’s drug division Janet Woodcock said that “data suggests that antibacterial ingredients may do more harm than good over the long-term.”
3. Hand disinfectant products used in hospitals and medical centers are not included in the ban.
4. Manufacturers have a year to remove the banned ingredients.
