1. The students from Santa Ana, Calif., charter school El Sol Academy acted as patients, nurses, anesthesiologists and surgeons.
2. Medical professionals taught students about educational paths for healthcare careers.
“Armed with a more intimate understanding of the various roles in an ambulatory surgical setting, we hope these students follow a career path in healthcare,” said HOI Surgery Center Newport Beach’s Gabrielle White, executive director of ambulatory services and network development.
3. Students learned about infection control, studied bacteria under a black light and diagnosed bone-related injuries.
4. Orthopedic surgeon Andrew Gerken, MD, taught students about OR procedures and surgical tools and equipment.
5. The surgery center plans to hold future mock surgery events.
