North Carolina Department of Health denies 3 out of 5 ASC projects, despite demand — 4 insights

The North Carolina Department of Health denied Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health Care, Durham, N.C.-based Duke University Health System and Raleigh, N.C.-based WakeMed’s ASC development applications, the Triangle Business Journal reports.

1. Five health organizations applied for approval to open ASCs. The state sought to fill six open operating rooms.

2. The state approved one-room ASC proposals from RAC Surgery and Raleigh-based OrthoNC, leaving four ORs available.

3. The state doesn’t release its formal findings until five days after the denial.

4. A projection shows Wake County will need at least six more ORs by 2020 to meet growing demand, Triangle Business Journal reports.
