Shorter surgical shifts linked to improved outcomes for some procedures

Patient outcomes for appendicitis improved when facilities adopted a shift-based acute care surgery model with shorter shifts, according to a study presented at ACS 2019, Oct. 27-31 in San Francisco.

Researchers compared outcomes under a 12-hour shift model and a 24-hour general surgery on-call model in the study reported on by Physicians Weekly.

While perforation and operative duration were similar between groups, the shorter-shift model was associated with shorter length of stay, lower organ space infection rates, reduced time until surgeon interaction, and decreased cost.
