HCA Surgery Venture’s new COO eyes next wave of ASC growth

Shaun Cartwright was recently named chief operating officer of HCA Healthcare’s ASC division, Surgery Ventures, where he will oversee 150 ASCs across 16 states and involve around 3,400 physician partners.

Mr. Cartwright joined Becker’s to discuss his new role. 

Question: With 3,400 physician partners, what strategies are most effective in building long-term, aligned relationships with physicians who face growing market pressures?

Shaun Cartwright: At Surgery Ventures, we believe in a true partnership with physicians. We empower our physicians by providing them with the resources and support to focus on what matters most — delivering the best possible outpatient care for our patients.

Q: Surgery Ventures has grown to more than 150 centers across 16 states. Where do you see the most opportunity for ASC expansion over the next five years?

SC: With more than 150 surgery centers nationwide and growing, we utilize the data, innovative technology and best practices of HCA Healthcare to enhance efficiency and ensure our physicians and patients thrive.

Q: What are the biggest operational or workforce challenges you’re addressing to keep centers efficient and sustainable in today’s tight labor market?
SC: Surgery Ventures has more than three decades of experience building, operating and improving the outpatient surgery experience. Our approach to delivering high-quality care is rooted in our belief of always doing what is right for our patients.
