Here are five recent firsts in the realm of minimally invasive and robotically-assisted surgery, as reported by Becker’s:
1. Maple Grove. Minn.-based Francis Medical announced that Aaron Milbank, MD, performed the first commercial procedure in the Midwest using its Vanquish Water Vapor Ablation System at High Pointe Surgery Center in Lake Elmo, Minn.
2. Warqaa Akram, MD, a surgeon with ECU Health Cancer Care, performed the first colorectal procedures using the da Vinci Single Port system in North Carolina.
3. New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System became the first health system in the world to use a newly cleared treatment system that delivers radiation directly to liver tumors through the bloodstream. The system uses the TheraSphere Y-90 Any Day Dosing capability within the TheraSphere 360 Management Platform, which allows physicians to treat patients on more days of the week and reduce time to care for hepatocellular carcinoma.
4. Surgeons at Coral Terrace, Fla.-based Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Heart Institute successfully performed Florida’s first partial heart transplant on an 11-year-old patient. The procedure involves implanting a “living valve” to prevent the need for future open-heart surgeries because the valve grows with the child.
5. Surgical robotics company ForSight Robotics’ platform was used to complete the world’s first fully robot-assisted cataract surgery performed on a human patient.
Dr. Alexey Rapoport performed the surgery with the JASPER Platform, which provides surgeons with advanced imaging, precision and motion scaling to reduce surgeon fatigue and variability between procedures.
