Warqaa Akram, MD, a surgeon with ECU Health Cancer Care, performed the first colorectal procedures using the da Vinci Single Port system in North Carolina.
The robotic platform allows surgeons to perform complex colorectal procedures with a single incision. Traditional minimally invasive surgeries typically require multiple incisions, according to an April 17 news release from ECU Health.
The organization plans to use the da Vinci SP platform for colorectal procedures including colon and rectal cancer resections, partial and total colectomies, surgery for inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis surgery, rectal prolapse repair ostomy reversals and minimally invasive resections for select benign or early rectal tumors.
Dr. Akram completed the first two single port colorectal surgeries in North Carolina on March 16 at ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, the release said.
