ABIM leadership still focused on 10-year exams

The American Gastroenterology Association reported from the American Board of Internal Medicine GI Specialty Board Meeting that ABIM’s efforts are focusing on “maintaining business as usual.”

ABIM acknowledged that the AGA requested a change to the 10-year exam policy, but does not plant to make the change at this time. The ABIM cited research showing the exams are effective. The AGA leadership is “disappointed” with the decision and feels closed-book assessments don’t represent the realities of medicine in the digital age.

The AGA has the alterative recertification with “The Gastroenterologist: Accountable Professionalism in Practice.” The AGA encourages physicians continue lifelong learning instead of testing and plans to continue pressure to end the MOC exam.
