Top 10 Most Frequent All-Listed Hospital Procedures

In 2006, at least one procedure was performed during six out of 10 hospital stays and 24.4 million discharges with procedures occurred. The top 10 all-listed procedures, which include all procedures performed during the hospital stay, made up 55 percent of all the procedures performed that year.

Here are the top 10 most frequent all-listed procedures in hospitals, along with their number of stays with the procedure (in thousands) and percent of discharges with the procedure, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP).

   1. Blood transfusion — 2,382 stays (10 percent)
   2. Diagnostic cardiac catheterization, coronary arteriography — 1,671 stays (7 percent)
   3. Repair of obstetric laceration — 1,373 stays (6 percent)
   4. Cesarean section — 1,346 stays (6 percent)
   5. Respiratory intubation and mechanical ventilation — 1,294 stays (5 percent)
   6. Circumcision — 1,224 (5 percent)
   7. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy — 1,213 stays (5 percent)
   8. Artificial rupture of membranes to assist delivery — 1,007 stays (4 percent)
   9. Fetal monitoring — 958 stays (4 percent)
  10. Prophylactic vaccinations and inoculations — 945 stays (4 percent)
