These 5 specialties got the most fellowship applications in 2018 — Gastroenterology is No. 4

The National Resident Matching Program reported more physicians matched for medical fellowships in 2018 than any year before, according to the American Medical Association.

The Specialty Matching Service reported 10,778 applicants competed for 10,149 fellowship positions offered by 4,357 programs.

Here are the specialties that got the most applicants:

1. Cardiovascular disease — 1,261 applicants for 894 positions

2. Pulmonary disease and critical care medicine — 789 applicants for 568 positions

3. Hematology and oncology — 788 applicants for 553 positions

4. Gastroenterology — 759 applicants for 496 positions

5. Sports medicine — 364 applicants for 266 positions
