The next frontier for Physicians Endoscopy: Expanded services and a new name

After more than two decades of helping freestanding, single-specialty endoscopic ASCs thrive across the U.S., Physicians Endoscopy is entering the next phase of growth and development. The company, which has partnerships with 60 gastroenterology surgery centers and more than 600 gastroenterologists nationwide, is expanding its services to include practice management and development.

The company has rebranded to PE GI Solutions to reflect its current business strategy and services added over the years.

“We are moving forward and beyond from being a GI provider to ASCs. The rebrand takes us closer to the patients by being involved in the practice side as well and having the ability to provide GI physicians with support services to cover the spectrum of care from the practice all the way to the ASC perspective,” said David Young, president and CEO of PE GI Solutions.

“From a business strategy standpoint, our goal is to include a single, cohesive patient experience that the GI patient needs and deserves. We provide support to GI physicians to make sure patients are able to get that experience in the best way possible. The business strategy allows us to be very vertical and funnel everything the patient and provider needs to through a single touch point.”

PE GI Solutions will continue to focus on its core business model, ASC development and management, while also providing practice management, anesthesia, infusion and pathology services. Looking ahead, the company aims to expand on its clinical research service and add specialty pharmacy services. These changes pave the way for a more comprehensive offering needed as patients with GI issues are living longer, and experts are recommending colonoscopy screenings begin at a younger age.

“Patient demographics are changing, and care models are changing. Younger patients have gained more access to GI services,” said Mr. Young. “We believe there is a large population who need care for various GI requirements. On top of that, we need to provide care management for patients, not based on a single episode, but over a lifetime of care for the many needs GI patients have. Some may have episodic needs, and others require more long-term management.”

The patient experience was at the center of PE GI Solutions’ decision to expand services. Traditionally, patients went on an initial visit with the gastroenterologist, and depending on the diagnosis, they would be sent out for pathology reports or other diagnostic tests. But when it became time for the patient to have a procedure, the anesthesiologist might not have been in network. All these elements add time, stress and costs to patient care.

“Those things give a complex and insecure experience to patients who need security, comfort and confidence,” said Mr. Young. “They have a problem, and they are at the doctor for a problem. The ability to take away the barriers of administration and confusion and being able to go to the same place with integrated EMRs, that’s a good patient experience.”

PE GI Solutions offers surgery center and practice management solutions together or independently to fit the provider needs. The platform allows patients and gastroenterologists to coordinate care and develop sophisticated value-based care models.

“The depth of our model allows physicians to manage the cost and outcomes of GI care and the quality outcomes,” said Mr. Young. “At PE, we believe that we should be a larger, deeper, more vertical platform focusing on the deep needs of GI patients and meeting their needs rather than being spread across many markets.”

PE GI Solutions partnered with Silver Springs, Md.-based Capital Digestive Care in 2019 and is integrating data from the company’s experience into the Practice Solutions platform. Capital Digestive Care is among the largest gastroenterology groups in the Mid-Atlantic region, with more than 60 physicians and 17 office locations. It serves more than 70,000 patients annually.

“The reason we partnered with Capital Digestive Care is because of their reputation in the marketplace, both from a leadership perspective and business perspective, but also because they built a service platform for practices,” said Mr. Young. “We partnered with them to support and invest in the service platform and integrate it. We can offer it under the umbrella of PE GI Solutions. We are very excited because both the practice and center platforms are growing in service offerings and solutions and the number of customers we are touching.”

Looking ahead, the company plans to expand its partnerships and GI market share.
“PE is not moving away from its core focus on GI,” said Mr. Young. “It’s still partnering with GI physicians and expanding our services to meet their needs. Healthcare is complex, and we understand the GI physicians want to better serve their patients. The provider-patient experience is fundamental to what we offer with our solution.”
