Study: CT Colonography Effective Screening Tool for Colon Cancer

The results of a new study found that CT colonography is a safe, viable option for Medicare-aged patients, according to a news release.

The study appears in the July 2012 American Journal of Roentgenology, published by the American Roentgen Ray Society.

One of the authors of the study, which looked at 1,400 Medicare-aged patients, said the findings answer a number of the questions raised by Medicare when the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services explained why it decided not to cover the procedure in 2009.

The author said the researchers believe there would be an increase screening compliance rate of about 15 percent if CT colonography was covered by Medicare or third-party payors.
