Prescient Surgical's CleanCision reduced incisional contamination in colorectal surgery: 5 notes

Prescient Surgical's novel wound retractor CleanCision is associated with reduced bacterial contamination in colorectal surgery, according to a study in the World Journal of Surgery.

Here are five things to know.

1. Colorectal surgery has high rates of surgical site infection, and according to a Clinical Microbiology and Infection study, up to half of all abdominal incisions may be contaminated during colon surgery.

2. This prospective multicenter pilot study used CleanCision, a wound retractor combining continuous irrigation and barrier protection in 86 patients undergoing elective colorectal resection.

3. CleanCision was associated with a 66 percent reduction in overall bacterial contamination at the protected incision edge compared to the exposed incision edge and a 71 percent reduction in enteric bacterial contamination.

4. There were no adverse effects attributed to CleanCision use.

5. Prescient Surgical received FDA 510(k) approval for CleanCision in 2017.
