In both diets, patients were given a low-volume split dose magnesium citrate bowel preparation. Researchers conducted the study at a single center. Patients underwent an outpatient colonoscopy and were given either a clear liquid diet or a low-residue diet. Researchers evaluated bowel preparation and patient satisfaction.

Researchers didn’t detect a difference in either of the groups, however a higher percentage of low residue diet group patients were satisfied with the preparation.

Researchers concluded, “There was no significant difference between LRD and CLD in patients using a magnesium citrate bowel preparation for screening and surveillance colonoscopies. Patient satisfaction scores were higher with an LRD compared with a CLD. We believe the LRD should be the recommended diet in patients using a standard bowel preparation for screening and surveillance colonoscopy.”
