Independent gastroenterologist pay trends over time

Self-employed gastroenterologists can see substantial salary growth over the course of their careers, according to data from Medscape’s salary explorer.

Nationwide, those with one to seven years of experience earn an average of $410,000 annually. That figure rises steadily with experience:

  • Eight to 14 years: $480,000
  • 15 to 28 years: $580,000

That marks a 41% increase from early to mid-career compensation — followed by a plateau, with earnings remaining steady from 15 to 28 years of experience.

These salary trends come as private equity investment in gastroenterology continues to rise. Between 2012 and 2021, PE acquisitions in GI surged, now covering over 13% of practicing gastroenterologists, according to Petris Center data. In addition, a JAMA Health Forum study linked these acquisitions to higher procedure costs without improvements in quality.

At the Becker's 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, taking place June 11-13 in Chicago, spine surgeons, orthopedic leaders and ASC executives will come together to explore minimally invasive techniques, ASC growth strategies and innovations shaping the future of outpatient spine care.
