GI physician leader to know: Dr. David Johnson of Digestive & Liver Disease Specialists

David A. Johnson, MD, is a gastroenterologist practicing with Digestive & Liver Disease Specialists in Norfolk, Va. He also serves as a professor of medicine and chief of gastroenterology at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk. He is a past president of the American College of Gastroenterology and co-founded the National Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee, which he co-chaired for 10 years. He has served on both the GI Multi-Society CRC Screening Task Force and ACG Guidelines Committee for CRC screening.

Dr. Johnson worked with a Virginia State Senator to pass the first legislation to mandate colon cancer screening with colonoscopy as the preferred standard. He has won numerous awards over the course of his career, such as the Presidential Award from the Virginia GI Society and the Berk Fise Award for 2012 from the American College of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Johnson central research interests are esophageal reflux disease and colon cancer screening, and he co-edited the American College of Physicians’ book, “Dyspepsia.” He is the current GI section editor for Medscape Gastroenterology, Medscape GI Viewpoints and Medscape GI Consultant Corner as well as the esophageal section editor for NEJM Journal Watch Gastroenterology.

Dr. Johnson earned his medical degree at Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He completed his residency at Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va., where he also completed his fellowship.
