GI Money Saver: Buy Tubes Rolled, Not Pre-Cut

Nancy Nikolovski, administrator of Physicians Endoscopy Center in Houston, Texas, has implemented a program at PEC to reward employees for ideas that save the center money. If the change results in significant savings, the employee will share in the profit. If the change is more quality-based but still useful, Ms. Nikolovski will give the employee an extra hour for lunch, time off or other rewards. One of the best ideas she received was the suggestion to buy a roll of tubing and cut the tubing down to the needed size.

“We used pre-cut suction tubing [connected to our suction containers], and one tech said, ‘Why do we have pre-cut tubing when we could just buy a roll and cut down to our size?’,” she says. “I thought that was a very good idea.” Ms. Nikolovski says she saved 50 percent on tubing by implementing this change, and the center didn’t have as much waste because the GI tubes were always cut to the needed size.
