GI groups fear impact of Trump’s travel ban: 4 key notes

After President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning immigration from seven countries, several gastroenterology facing professional societies expressed concerns about the upcoming Digestive Disease Week, Gastroenterology & Endoscopy reports.

Here’s what you should know.

1. The American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy fear physicians from the banned nations will not attend the conference.

2. Grace Elta, MD, conference council chair, told Gastroenterology & Endoscopy, “What we fear is that many people won’t come because they’re angry at the United States.”

3. Dr. Elta said several physicians cancelled their intent to attend in protest of the ban.

4. DDW organizers said eight researchers from affected countries submitted abstracts for consideration. The organizers are in the process of accepting abstracts for presentation still.
