FDA approves Olympus scope with disposable endcap — 4 insights

The FDA approved Olympus' TJF-Q190V duodenoscope, which notably features a sterile, disposable distal endcap.

What you should know:

1. The disposable features allow the scope to be cleaned and reprocessed more efficiently, helping to fight cross-contamination.

2. The scope has several other cleaning features, including a distal-end flushing adapter for cleaning the elevator mechanism, a sealed elevator wire channel port, and a water-resistant scope connector that minimizes fluid ingress risk.

3. Olympus will inspect and maintain every scope based on reprocessing frequency. The company is doing this to ensure scope functionality isn't compromised over time.

4. The scope also includes an expanded field of view and guidewire locking, and accommodates more precise handling.
