British societies release new upper gastrointestinal endoscopy standards — 8 recommendations

The British Society of Gastroenterology and Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland published new upper gastrointestinal endoscopy quality standards in Gut.

David Bjorkman, MD, of Salt Lake City-based University of Utah, and colleagues examined American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and American College of Gastroenterology quality standards from 2006 and 2015, respectively, to create a new set of standards.

Researchers created 56 total recommendations. Here are eight key standards:

1. A safety checklist should be completed before starting an oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy.

2. Endoscopists should perform at least 100 OGDs annually to maintain a high-quality examination standard.

3. Diagnostic OGDs should be performed with high-definition video endoscopy systems with the ability to take pictures and perform biopsies.

4. All relevant anatomical landmarks and detected lesions should be documented.

5. Endoscopy units should follow safe sedation practices.

6. Intravenous sedation and local anesthetic throat spray can be used together, if required, however caution should be exercised.

7. A report summarizing findings should be presented to a patient before discharge.

8. Practices should have a method to ensure histological results are in place.
