Altered yogurt bacteria could lead to new colorectal cancer test

Engineered yogurt bacteria has the potential to join the ranks of existing colorectal cancer screening methods, according to an MPR report.

Sangeeta, Bhatia, MD, PhD, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, is developing a method of CRC screening using nanoparticle delivery and a urine test. Through modification, yogurt bacteria produce nanoparticles that interact with colorectal tumors after being consumed. The interaction can then be detected by a simple urine test.

The test has been demonstrated in mice, but further clinical trials in both mice and humans are still necessary, according to the report.
