AGA chooses 10 physician-scientists for diversity program

The American Gastroenterological Association selected 10 early-career physician-scientists as “scholars” for the 2019 AGA Fostering Opportunities Resulting in Workforce and Research Diversity program.

The 10 scholars will undergo a year-long training and mentorship program promoting underrepresented minorities pursuing careers as physician-scientists.

The scholars are:

  • Yelina Alvarez, MD, PhD, of Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania Health System
  • Dominique Bailey, MD, of New York City-based Columbia University Medical Center
  • Veroushka Ballester-Vargas, MD, of Columbia University Medical Center
  • Oriana Damas, MD, of University of Miami (Fla.) Miller School of Medicine
  • Patricia Jones, MD, of University of Miami Miller School of Medicine
  • Antonio Mendoza-Ladd, MD, of Texas Tech University at El Paso
  • Folasade May, MD, PhD, of University of California at Los Angeles, VA Health Administration
  • Akinbowale Oyalowo, MD, of Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine
  • Nneka Ufere, MD, of Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital
  • Eric J. Vargas, MD, of Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic
