AGA addresses duodenoscope infection risks

A recent report linked duodenoscopes, used for ERCP, to carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae infections. The American Gastroenterological Association has responded to the potential infection risk.

The AGA report acknowledges that infection risk may be linked to the complexity of the scopes, a risk which remains despite proper reprocessing protocols. The AGA, along with its sister GI societies, is working with the FDA device branch and device manufacturers to solve the issue.

New FDA guidelines are expected this year.
