6 reasons patients avoid undergoing screening colonoscopy

A number of healthcare stakeholders have pledged to bring the national colorectal cancer screening rate to 80 percent by 2018, but many Americans remain reluctant to undergo one of the key screening procedures: colonoscopy. Here are six statistics on why patients avoid undergoing the procedure, according to a study from market research firm Mizzouri.

•   21.8 percent feel the test is not necessary
•   20.1 percent feel the test is too expensive
•   20.1 percent dislike the procedure
•   15.8 percent undergo other methods to avoid colon cancer
•   6.5 percent do not know they are supposed to undergo screening colonoscopy
•   6.5 percent are too busy to undergo the procedure
