Nicklaus Children’s taps chief of cardiovascular surgery

Miami-based Nicklaus Children’s Hospital has named David Kalfa, MD, PhD, chief of its section of cardiovascular surgery and co-director of the Nicklaus Children’s Heart Institute. He will also be a professor at Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine in Westchester, according to an Aug. 11 system release. 

The first joint hire under FIU’s partnership with Nicklaus Children’s, Dr. Kalfa is a pioneer in minimally invasive surgery for congenital heart defects and specializes in complex neonatal cardiac surgery and pediatric valve repair. He has led international research on tissue-engineered heart devices, AI-guided surgical planning and regenerative medicine.

He joins from Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City, where he directed pediatric cardiac innovation programs. Dr. Kalfa earned his medical degree from the University of Marseille in France and a PhD from Paris Descartes University.
