How cardiologists’ earnings have changed since 2021

The average annual salary for cardiologists has increased each of the last three years, jumping from $353,970 in 2021 to $423,250 in 2023, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Cardiologists earned the most in Maryland in 2021, Idaho in 2022 and in Minnesota in 2023. 

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released updated compensation data April 3 to reflect May 2023 information, the latest available. 

Here is the average annual salary for cardiologists, along with the average earnings in the state where cardiologists have earned the most in each year since 2021:

2021

Mean annual wage: $353,970

Mean hourly wage: $170.18

Highest-paying state: Maryland, annual mean wage of $362,090

2022

Mean annual wage: $421,330, year-over-year increase of $67,360

Mean hourly wage: $202.56

Highest-paying state: Idaho, annual mean wage of $521,690

2023

Mean annual wage: $423,250, year-over-year increase of $1,920

Mean hourly wage: $203.49

Highest-paying state: Minnesota, annual mean wage of $523,550
