Most physicians receive a salary bonus when hired, according to the Merritt Hawkins 2019 review of physician and advanced practitioner recruiting incentives.

Merritt Hawkins, a national healthcare consulting and recruiting firm, included a sample of 3,131 permanent physician and advanced practitioner search assignments the company conducted for its clients from April 2018 to the end of March 2019.

Five physician recruitment benchmarks:

1. Over 70 percent of physicians were offered a salary with a bonus.

2. The average bonus was $32,692.

3. Almost all, 98 percent, of positions offered to pay for continuing medical education.

4. Thirty-one percent of searches offered educational loan forgiveness. On average, the amount of forgiveness offered for physicians was $101,571.

5. Ninety-eight percent of searches offered relocation allowance, with the average amount offered being $10,393.
