Here are 20 deals in the last two years to know involving physician practice and group acquisitions:
Private equity-backed groups
- In November, Dublin, Ohio-based pharmaceutical distributor and healthcare services company Cardinal Health — backed by Apollo Global Management — acquired a majority stake in Dallas-based GI Alliance.
- In August, Nashville, Tenn.-based Rural Healthcare Group, part of private equity firm Kinderhook Industries, agreed to acquire financially troubled Steward Health Care’s 175-physician group for $245 million in cash.
- In May, Integrated Oncology Network, backed by private equity firm Silver Oak Services Partners, acquired Urology Partners in Cleveland, expanding its reach to more than 60 facilities nationwide
- In April, Ivy Fertility, backed by InTandem Capital Partners, acquired Dallas IVF, a practice specializing in advanced reproductive technology, in-vitro fertilization, and third-party reproduction. This acquisition brought Ivy Fertility’s network to 52 reproductive endocrinologists across 27 locations in nine states.
- In October 2023, private equity group Ascend Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in Seoul Medical Group, which has nearly 400 primary care physicians and more than 4,400 specialists in the U.S.
- In March 2023, private equity firm Kohlberg & Company acquired GI platform United Digestive and its 80 locations for $500 million from Frazier Healthcare Partners.
- Also in March 2023, private equity firm Clairvest Group acquired Bluetree Dental and its 29 providers and more than 45 offices for $9 million.
- In January 2023, private equity-backed Health Network One acquired Boca Raton, Fla.-based Premier Eye Care, an ophthalmology network of more than 20,000 eyecare providers.
Amazon
- In February 2023, Amazon finalized its $3.9 billion acquisition of virtual and in-person primary care company One Medical, giving the company access to more than 200 brick-and-mortar physicians offices and roughly 815,000 One Medical members.
Optum
- In December, Deerfield, Ill.-based SCA Health, Optum’s ASC arm, acquired OrthoAlliance. Private equity-backed, Sharonville, Ohio-based OrthoAlliance, which has partnered with more than 200 physicians across all orthopedics and sports medicine specialties, joined SCA Health on Nov. 1.
- In March, Optum, parent company of ASC chain SCA Health, received approval to bypass a state review of its planned purchase of physician-owned Corvallis (Ore.) Clinic.
- In April 2023, Optum acquired multispecialty physician group Crystal Run Healthcare and its more than 400 providers.
CVS
- In May 2023, CVS Health completed its $10.6 billion acquisition of primary care company Oak Street Health.

- In April, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Atlantis Orthopedics and Port St. Lucie-based South Florida Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine announced plans to merge.
- In March 2024, Baton Rouge Orthopaedic Clinic and Lafayette-based Louisiana Orthopedic Specialists announced plans to merge.
- In July 2023, Marlton, N.J.-based Virtua Health’s Virtua Medical Group has added Moorestown, N.J.-based Reconstructive Orthopedics and its 300-plus employees, including 90 clinicians, making Virtua the largest orthopedic provider in Southern New Jersey,
- In November 2023, American Shared Hospital Services acquired a 60% majority equity interest in two cancer centers, Southern New England Regional Cancer Center and Roger Williams Radiation Therapy.
- In August 2023, medical device company INVO Bioscience closed its $10.5 million acquisition of the Madison-based Wisconsin Fertility Institute.
- In April 2023, global asset firm TPG and pharmaceutical distributor AmerisourceBergen acquired OneOncology and its 700 oncologists for $2.1 billion.
- In March 2023, ASG Eye Hospitals acquired India-based eye care chain Vasan Eye Care for $64 million, bringing ASG’s network to more than 150 facilities.
