From broadened procedure lists to advances in surgical technology, two ASC leaders joined Becker’s to discuss the biggest opportunity for ASC growth.

Question: What do you see as the biggest opportunity for ASCs and outpatient care over the next five years?

Editor’s note: These responses were edited lightly for clarity and flow.

Lauren Phillips. Director of Invasive Services at the Cardiac and Vascular Institute (Chiefland, Fla.):The greatest opportunities for the ASC setting over the next five years will center around the continued expansion of procedures that can be safely and effectively performed in the outpatient environment. ASCs are experiencing rapid growth, a trend that will accelerate as more reimbursable codes are approved and added to the outpatient list. At the same time, technology is evolving quickly. The ability to integrate advanced tools and techniques, once limited to the hospital setting, into ASCs will not only broaden the scope of care but also enhance patient outcomes, efficiency, and overall accessibility. These advancements position ASCs to play an increasingly vital role in the healthcare delivery system.

Lisa York, RN. Executive Director of Hunterdon Center for Surgery (Flemington, N.J.): If we could capture more variety in our centers, like cardio etc, that would be good and also opportunities to use technology to improve efficiencies and cost while improving patient care and satisfaction.
