Physician medical group acquisitions increases 109% in Q1 2017: 4 takeaways on M&A activity

This year has seen a major increase in physician medical group merger and acquisition activity, according to Health Care M&A Report acquisition data.

Here are four takeaways:

1. In the first quarter of 2017, there were 48 physician medical group acquisitions, a 78 percent increase from Q4 2016.

2. This figure is a 109 percent jump from Q1 2016, which had 23 acquisitions.

3. Hospital or health systems had seven physician medical group acquisitions in Q1 2017. Private equity firms also had seven acquisitions.

4.  Lisa Phillips, editor of the Health Care M&A Report, said physicians are increasingly realizing affiliating with a larger practice will prove beneficial in the changing healthcare environment.
