Military Leaders Break Ground on San Antonio Surgery Center

Military medical leaders broke ground on Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgery Center on April 20 at Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio, according to a My San Antonio report.

Construction will begin soon on the new outpatient facility, according to the report. San Antonio's military facilities will transition to a regional military health system, and Wilford Hall Medical Center's current inpatient activity will move to Brooke Army Medical Center. Brooke Army will be renamed the San Antonio Military Medical Center.

The new ASC will contain four wings, each three stories tall with a basement. The ASC will be constructed in three phases and house more than 40 outpatient clinics and services when completed, according to the report. Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2011, with completion planned for 2015.

The current Wilford Hall Medical Center building will be demolished once the new ASC is complete and operational.
