Fairview Health Services, University Plan $182M Surgery Center

Minneapolis-based Fairview Health Services and the University of Minnesota are collaborating on a $182 million surgery center project, according to a Star Tribune report.

The surgery center, as well as specialty clinics, will replace existing facilities that are at capacity — the buildings manage more than three times the patient volume that was originally estimated, according to the report. The university and health system had planned the project earlier, but it has been stalled since at least 2008, primarily due to economic issues, according to the report.

The university plans to borrow $132 million from the bond market to help fund the surgery center. Minnesota Masonic Charities is donating $10 million to the project.
Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2013 with an opening date no later than Jan 1, 2016.

The university and its physician group, University of Minnesota Physicians, are also in talks with Fairview to form a co-management model to further integrate physicians into the hospital.
