McLane: It can still be a good time to open a surgery center if you do the feasibility analysis and due diligence honestly and carefully to assure you have the case volume to support it, that payors will support the center in the marketplace and that the physicians are truly committed to the success of the center, which means changing practice patterns.
Consider working with an experienced ASC team: architect, contractor, development consultants to ensure that you get what you want, that it will be fully functional and as efficient as possible, and it will meet regulatory requirements.
Make sure that the management team has strong ASC experience. Be sure to hire an ASC experienced executive director or a management company/consultant with experience in ASC startups. The first year in the life of an ASC is critical to the success of the center.
