The Surgery Center for FGM, the nation's first nonprofit surgery center, opened in Atlanta to treat victims of female genital mutilation both surgically and psychologically.

1. T. Wayne Bloodworth, MD, cosmetic surgeon and gynecologist, opened the center.
2. The World Health Organization estimates approximately 500,000 women are impacted by FGM annually.
3. Dr. Bloodworth opened the center because there were no nonprofit surgical settings available to these patients. The center takes a multifaceted approach to ensure a patients receive both surgical treatments and mental health support.
4. He said, "The most common quote from a patient after having the procedure is 'I feel whole again.'"
