With a focus on orthopedic and neurosurgery, the physicians led a team for Project Zero, which focused on making surgical site infection a “never event.” Their effort included:
• Reduce OR traffic
• Limit OR door openings
• Comply with Surgical Improvement Project measures for antibiotic administration
• Reduce variation among surgeons by improving postoperative protocol
• Adopting uniform policies and changing surgical attire
• Improved communication among surgical team
The project was able to reduce SSI rate by more than half in 18 months.
