Here are five things to know:
1. Despite 46 percent of medical residents being female, a mere 38 percent of full-time academic faculty members are women.
2. Additionally, women make up only 21 percent of full-time professors, 15 percent of department chairs and 16 percent of medical school deans.
3. Women comprise only 1 percent of all department chairs. In orthopedic surgery, this number drops to 0 percent.
4. The number of women in academic medicine has remained relatively flat over the last five years.
5. The percentage of female applicants to medical school peaked from 2003 to 2004. However, the number of applicants has continued to fall since that time frame.
