Which countries are positioned as premier medical tourism destinations? 6 things to know

With about 2.5 million patients travelling abroad for medical care, the United States ranks as the largest outbound market for medical tourism, according to Forbes.

Here are six things to know:

1. 4. People travel to Thailand, Turkey, Hungary and Mexico to undergo minor elective treatments, such as cosmetic surgery, ophthalmology, hair transplants and health checkups.

2. Dubai is gaining steam as a medical tourism destination, with about 300,000 inbound patients in 2015. Dubai’s private healthcare investment allows it to offer highly specialized services.

3. American patients spend about $35 billion for medical services abroad.

4. Russia clocks in as the second largest in the medical tourism outbound market.

5. People are often drawn to the United States, Germany, Singapore and India for orthopedic, oncology, organ transplant and cardiology services.

6. In order for countries to establish themselves as premier medical tourism destinations, they must implement health regulations that mirror “internationally-established medical practices of the highest caliber,” according to Forbes.
