Western New York spends $808M on weight-related healthcare — 5 highlights

With two in three Western New York adults being overweight or obese, the region spends an estimated $808 million on combating weight-related problems, according to The Buffalo News.

Here are five highlights:

1. The overweight and obesity rate among adults in Western New York is 63.4 percent.

2. The New York obesity rate is projected to reach 50 percent by 2030. The state currently has an obesity rate just under 25 percent.

3. Overweight and obesity in New York attributes to $8.7 billion in excess annual medical costs.

4. Obesity is associated with countless medical issues including Type 2 diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular disease, stoke, cancer, gallbladder disease and chronic back pain.

5. Some of the factors driving obesity are sedentary lifestyles where people sit for the majority of the workday as well as biological, genetic, behavioral and social factors.
