1. The money was donated by Josephine Herbert Gleis, the mother of institute namesake Gavin Herbert.
2. During her lifetime, Ms. Gleis has donated more than $19 million to UC Irvine. In 2007, she gave $10 million for construction of the eye center.
3. Center director Roger Steinert thanked Ms. Gleis by saying “When we find ways to eradicate preventable blindness, we will owe her a debt of gratitude for her steadfast support of vital research.”
