Here are the key details to know:
1. The survey, titled The Nation’s Pulse: The Texas Medical Center’s Consumer & Physician Survey which included 452 physicians from across the U.S., found 70 percent of general physicians and 78 percent of specialists would rather be paid a straight salary than a compensation model that includes a volume component. Currently, institutions such as the Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic pay physicians a straight salary.
2. While quality of care typically is not associated with the physician’s compensation model, physicians at institutions with a straight salary report having more time to work on research because they don’t have to “hit their numbers” on a regular basis.
3. One of the downsides of a straight salary model is that physicians may not be compensated for taking extra time with patients or increasing their caseload.
