The article interviews the center’s owner, Keith Smith, MD, as well as a surgeon at the center, James Totoro, MD, and explores the place of free-market pricing in medicine. According to the article, the center’s new fastest-growing group of patients is Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act enrollees, who, facing higher deductibles, are flying in from across the country to have cheaper surgeries than they might otherwise find in their hometowns. The demand for surgery is such that the center is looking to build two new operating rooms.

The Surgery Center of Oklahoma is often touted as an example of the triumph price transparency and has been featured in several articles in 2014.
