Here are five considerations:
1. Vastly different stakeholders participate in informatics, and rules surrounding aggregated data use vary between these industries. Thus,a lack of guidelines may inadvertently harm the provider-patient relationship and shared decision-making.
2. Aggregated data reduces an individual patient’s experience to a set of numbers. Some are concerned the industry is following a path of “the data knows best.”
3. The healthcare system is intimidating to patients who are vulnerable as they navigate the complex system. Instead of viewing patients as “information-seeking consumers,” providers should remember to place patients’ well-being above all.
4. Many different professionals touch big data, and not all are trained in healthcare values. For example, IT professionals will not necessarily adhere to the same values that providers will when dealing with patient data.
5. The industry must tackle the discrepancies in values between medicine and information technology to preserve patient experience above profit.
